We Made That

We have recently completed a study for the London Legacy Development Corporation which investigated potential models to deliver and effectively manage dual use residential and employment accommodation (commonly referred to as ‘live/ work’). The study includes analysis of previously undertaken research on the subject, documents a series of case study examples and describes opportunities, observations and recommendations for the potential role and value of such accommodation within the LLDC area.

Works to deliver enhanced public realm at Enfield Wash have recently been completed. The proposals, funded by the Outer London Fund, introduced a new cafe deck, refreshed surfacing, sustainable urban drainage, a colour-coded tree and steel letters.

We have recently completed a scoping study on behalf of the London Borough of Waltham Forest as part of an adventurous and comprehensive regeneration programme across High Streets in the Borough. The project aim is to regenerate the district centre, to increase opportunities for local businesses, improve the offer for visitors and residents and develop a case for public and private investment.

We Made That will be working with Loughborough University Arts on the ambitious ‘Market Town’ project in 2015. Alongside an exciting team of other practices including Something & Son and Kathrin Bohm, the project will deliver a programme of commissions and critical debate that will focus on the regeneration of the high street in the Town.

We Made That are delivering shopfront improvements to a designated parade of shops on Forest Road as a continuation of our scheme for shopfront and public realm improvements in the Blackhorse Lane regeneration area. The proposals have been granted planning permission and works will commence early in 2015.

QUALIFIED ARCHITECT/ URBAN DESIGNER

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled qualified architect or urban designer to join our team to work on a number of projects. Candidates applying should:

• have public realm delivery experience in the UK
  
• have strategic or master planning experience
  
• have the ability to work independently and take a lead on project development
  

On top of which you must be a talented designer and have good technical knowledge with a great eye for presentation, detail and execution. Excellent communication skills and a desire to contribute to lively, creative & productive team working required. Experience with Vectorworks, Photoshop and InDesign are essential.  

Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK and would ideally be available to start before end of January.

• have experience in undertaking quantitative and qualitative research through analytical and engaged processes
  
• have an excellent command of written and spoken English
  
• be organised and able to manage time efficiently
  
• have an interest in developing civic engagement through research 
  

On top of which you must have excellent InDesign skills, with a great eye for presentation, detail and execution. Ideally you will have worked within a similar role within a place-making, architecture or academic organisation in the past. Excellent communication skills and a desire to contribute to lively, creative & productive team working required.

Construction has started on our building frontage improvements in South End, Croydon. A total of 46 properties are involved in the scheme, which includes distinctive high-level graphics, ceramic murals and new business signage. The works are closely allied with public realm improvements of pavement widening and the creation of new public spaces, designed by a collaborative team of HASSELL and We Made That. Construction is due for completion in March 2015.

Our improvements to a key pocket of public realm in Enfield Wash is approaching completion. We have hopped the park over the road and instigated new sustainable urban drainage, as well as increase opportunities for the businesses and cafe to use this enhanced public space.

Hertford Road High Streets

We Made That have been awarded joint third place in the ‘Rising Stars’ category of the Future Wimbledon Competition. Our proposals transform the Broadway with market stalls, performances and fitness classes, with rear yards revitalised as “green rooms” for local businesses and deliveries made by tuk-tuks.

Oliver and Holly have been appointed to the Greater London Authority’s Specialist Assistance Team (SAT) – a team of expert advisers appointed to help with the shaping and realisation of Mayoral projects across the capital. They will advise on three specific aspects; Project set up, Community Capacity and Building Improvements in the delivery of the vision set out in the Mayor’s Action for High Streets.

High Street Fund

Work is progressing on site in Croydon’s South End, with public realm works nearing completion, and the recently appointed BRAC Contracts beginning on extensive building frontage improvements. The works are due for completion in March 2015.

Holly and David Knight of DK-CM will be speaking together on 23rd Septmeber for the East End Preservation Society under the headline: ‘Change of Plan: Engaging with Planning Today and Tomorrow’. Holly will discuss The Open Office project exploring Neighbourhood Planning, and David will introduce Building Rights, a popular repository for planning knowledge.

We Made That have recently completed a Qualitative Local Economy Study for the London Legacy Development Corporation. It is included as part of the evidence base for the new ‘LLDC Local Plan 2015 to 2031’, now out for consultation. The research included documentation of 15 exemplar businesses in the areas around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, investigation of their impacts on the neighbourhoods that surround them and identification of several emerging trends in the local economy.

Our London-wide Artists’ Workspace Study for the Mayor’s Office is now online. The study establishes an accurate picture of affordable studio provision for artists in London. Secondly, the study demonstrates the level of ingenuity and commitment of organisations supporting artists’ workspace, including workspace providers, Local Authorities and enlightened developers and highlights the complex and often highly innovative approaches that are required to take to make affordable creative workspace work.

Our Enfield Business Centre project, in collaboration with RCKa and Europa, has recently been opened by Deputy Mayor Kit Malthouse. Support from the Outer London Fund has allowed Enfield Council to extend the ground floor of the building, creating a multi-purpose business hub, improved access and an upgrade of ICT infrastructure. A new identity also establishes a new trajectory for EBC supporting more local businesses.

We are assisting the Greater London Authority with three ‘high street conversations’ to be held with boroughs and other interested parties, allied with the issue of the Mayor’s Action for High Streets. The three conversation events in North East, North West and South London will facilitate discussion to help the Mayor make the most of his future investment as well as the wider GLA support to accompany these funds. They will also provide a platform for networking, sharing of lessons learned and an opportunity to explore the differing aspects of the Mayor’s Actions for High Streets. They will be taking place in Brent on 24 July, Barking on 31 July and Croydon on 7 August.
