This project has re-invigorated Aske Gardens in the London Borough of Hackney to become a vibrant and welcoming, open-access sports and cultural space. Combining permanent proposals by We Made That and a temporary events proposal by United Visual Artists, the ambition was to leave a sustainable sports and cultural legacy for the local community.
Through the introduction of a graphic ‘detour’ pathway into the Gardens, the scheme encourages passers-by to enter this previously unapproachable site. Our proposals have delivered greater legibility, new circulation routes, improved surfaces for sports and pedestrian use, recycling provision, a planting re-fresh and the introduction of wildlife habitats in the Gardens.
We were also involved in a number of workshops to develop a local ‘sustainability map’ of socially engaged ideas for uses for leftover spaces in the vicinity of Aske Gardens.
